There isn't much of a selection as far as machines. I mean, compared to the multiple machines that I'm used to seeing at PF.
I've missed Penfield Fitness so much since moving! My favorite part was the sense of privacy there is! They have a private women's room and several smaller areas (as well as one large central area) as opposed to one large area where you can be seen at every angle at all times. I was just starting to exercise when I joined so it was a great comfort to me! The staff was always helpful and equipment up to date and clean.
It's got all you could want from a suburban gym including raquetteball courts, which is what I was interested in! They have friendly staff and what seemed like good trainers, though I don't know. The pool is not set up for swimming laps, but there are several well equipped equipment rooms and gyms where they have classes and programs.
There doesn't seem to be any real equipment sanitizing going on. You know how at PF there are stations all over with paper towels and sanitizing solution? Well they have a few stations here, but they have just regular hand towels (so I can reuse someone else's sweaty towel to wipe down the equipment...?) and the stations are few and far between. Another red flag for me. I don't know the real risk of using equipment which isn't cleaned as often, but it just didn't give me a good vibe. At PF, I always feel like the equipment is cleaned adequately and I always see employees cleaning stuff there. Here, not so much.
The staff here was friendly and welcoming. They have a gymnasium where you can play basketball which is a nice feature. There are multiple racquetball court rooms (I've never played, but if I did or wanted to invest in the sport its a nice feature). The locker rooms have a steam room and dry sauna. The pool is kept at a warm temperature which is nice for people who want to just get in the water without freezing to death in the process.
Pros:
Cons: The locker room definitely had a funny smell, like piss maybe? It was just a damp, dingy smell, I don't know. The locker room has carpet, and I imagine that all the wetness that the carpet soaks up from people going in there after showering or swimming can't be good for the smell of the carpet long term. I've never seen the locker rooms smell that bad at any Planet Fitness. Granted, PF doesn't have a pool or sauna, etc. But still.
The equipment is dirty, dusty. Could definitely use a good cleaning. I don't want to see other people's hair and dirt all over the floor. Kinda gross.
Excellent salt water pool!
Overall, I wouldn't get a membership here. The price they quoted me based on my age was decent ($45 a month, but is normally higher around $60) but not worth it based on the cleanliness of the facility. I would need to see more variety of machines like PF has and would need to see the odor problem in the locker room fixed if I were to ever consider it. There are other factors, but these are the main ones.
I printed a complimentary membership pass off of their website and decided to check them out. I already have a Planet Fitness membership but wanted to check out this gym because they have a pool, sauna, etc which PF does not.
After several broken bones and back surgery, the trainers and crew have helped me get into the best shape possible. The machines are pratcally all new. The pool is awesome! Planet Fitness is NO comparison!
Been coming to PSF for 4-5 years now.
