Good place if you would like to know more about photography history. The place is a house-museum so if you're into design and arquitecture you'll probably would like some details inside and outside the house. The gift shop has interesting and a big range of products. If you are in town you definitely should go!
I'm a minor fan of early photography, and my heart sank when I found out that there is one "History of Photography" gallery and discovered it to be so small and sparse. I find it fascinating to look at old photographs to understand their artistic, cultural, and technological significance and how photography changed over time. Unfortunately the Eastman Museum is not a place where I can do that.
On weekend guides provide excellent tours on the mansion and in the garden around it. The exhibition is also unique and diverse - there is a temporary exhibition which is able to satisfy the modern art geeks, there is a fixed exhibition of Kodak products and Mr George Eastman posessions surely important for the region and there is plenty of some eastern eggs like the camera obscura room :) Highly recommended place.
The photo gallery tour and the house tour were my favorites, so definitely try to make those if you can! You'll learn a lot about George Eastman and how Kodak revolutionized photography -- a really amazing history. What an eccentric man.
Excellent value. Cost only $5 for student tickets. My entrance covered a tour of the photography exhibit, a tour of the house, a concert, and a tour of the gardens. Allow for about 3-4 hours to explore everything and try to time it so you catch all the tours. Check the online schedule!
Apparently the Eastman Museum has one of the best photography collections in the history of the world with over 400,000 photographic objects. Unfortunately, visitors to the museum can only view a few dozen of them. For example, I think there were only about 10 or so from before 1885 on display. In total, a visitor might be able to see only about 100-200 photographs from any era in the entire museum.
Incredible history of photography and wealth. Do not go expecting to see a camera museum. Well laid out and the staff/docents are knowledgeable. Worth our time and money.
